Personally, the way the punishment is administered doesn't matter so much for me as the intent behind it. If I know I've disappointed, I feel miserable when I'm with a Dominant.

I find that a beating is the method which I prefer to be punished by; not because I enjoy it, but because it's immediate reinforcement and mindfucks really do an unhealthy number on me.

I completely agree, that's exactly how I feel. Nothing is quite as bad as actually letting my dominant down.
But then as to punishment matters, i am not very experienced or wandered far down the lane of extreme things or toys so maybe being spanked with a cane and locked away is worse, but really the thing I most strive for when I'm with a dominant is to keep him proud of me. And its devastating if he isn't.
