After six years of tampon use, it's shown signs of stretching but not breaking; it's now stretched long enough that I can hook my finger around it and pull it out so I can see it if I crane my neck. I've actually suspected that if it's stretched enough by then, it might not break when I have sex the first time. I've used a large dildo before and it didn't break. The reason I exclusively use tampons, in spite of the pain when pulling them out, is I intensely dislike pads. That might be why mine is more stretched out than other women's.
