"Whipping" is a very specific, serious activity. It's striking with a narrow, flexible instrument, which then concentrates the force of impact. With a long, tapering whip such as a bullwhip, the tip easily exceeds 750 miles per hour, exceeding the speed of sound and creating the whipcrack noise. That allows for quite a bit of damage if handled improperly. I mention that since safety should always be your paramount concern. You can reduce that risk by starting with a shorter, lighter whip, a slower motion (don't be deceiving if you strike and there's not an immediate mark - they emerge seconds late), a softer striking surface (that is, a lightly woven cord rather than densely, cloth rather than leather, leather rather than metal) or a broader striking surface (a flogger or paddle) to diffuse the force.
