    Making a flogger

Anyone have any experience making a flogger out of a belt and a dowel? I am about to try it and would like to hear if anyone has succeeded or failed in this venture.

I've bought all mine ready made, but a friend of mine put a very nice one together from PVC pipe and doe skin; threaded a couple dozen lengths all the way through to knot at the hilt, and wove more around the handle, with a heavy weight for proper balance.

As far as advice, I would probably cut the dowel in half and sandwich the belt between those with several screws (be sure to pre-drill and inset them), and buy some fabric or poly for a comfortable grip. Either fray the belt for a cat or leave it whole for a heavy whip.

I made a flogger from a keyring, a roll of leather string and black duct tape. It looks great, I made it more than ten years ago and I've used it plenty and it's still works fine.

All in all it took me about five minutes to make and was a great investment.

edit: I wouldn't try to cut up strips of the belt yourself. It's hard to get it straight even with specialised tools. Buy leather string on rolls.

If you want to use a belt, I would suggest a braided one. Then all you have to do is cut off one end and unbraid the strands.
