So for the three people bored enough to read a thread on insurance, here it is:

I spent this last weekend helping my kitten do damage assessment for a relief agency after Tropical Storm Fay dumped two feet of water on the East Coast of Florida.

Today I went out and bought flood insurance.

Just because you're not in a "flood zone" doesn't mean that you can't be impacted by a flood. What I saw this weekend wasn't flooding from rivers or other waterways, it was flooding of neighborhoods because the storm drains couldn't keep up. This can happen to any neighborhood where more rain falls than the drains were engineered to handle.

The problem is that normal homeowner's insurance doesn't typically cover flooding -- wind-driven water, yes; rising water, not so much.
